West Plains foster family aims to make an impact for local children

WEST PLAINS, Mo. -- Right now there are over 13,000 kids in foster care in the state of Missouri. When families take in a child, they sometimes need help providing clothing. A West Plains foster family is on a mission to help, with their very own Chaos Closet.

Ed and DeeDee button have been foster parents for about two years now.

"There's just such a need for foster parents and children are awesome and they just need someone to take a chance on them and help them when they needed the help," DeeDee Button told KY3.

They've fostered seven children, of all ages, four of which are currently with them now, ages 1 to 4.

"We've had kids come to us with literally just what they are wearing on their backs," Button said.

Suddenly having to provide a wardrobe for any child can be tough for any family.

The state of Missouri gives foster parents an annual allowance for clothing.

Button says it ranges from $250 a year for newborns and younger children up to around $500 a year for teens.

"So I've seen first-hand that the clothing allowance doesn't come close to covering everything a child needs in a year," Button exclaimed.

That's why a big green shed sits next to their home.

"This is the Chaos Closet. So we still have a lot of organizing left to do but you can see that the community has really just come in and stepped up and donated even more than just clothing, she added. We have diapers, we have infant tubs and car seats. We have some shoes. There's just anything you would need for a child coming in to your home."

The closet has already helped several families in its short existence.

"The idea behind this is was kind of just give a penny, take a penny concept, so if you need it, come and get it. If you have a surplus of clothing, shoes, coats...I'll take diapers, hygiene products, anything of that nature, let me know and I'll put it in here and make sure it can go to someone that can use it."

To donate or pick up clothes, just message The Chaos Closet Facebook page and the Button's will get you taken care of.

Chaos never sounded sounded so good.
