SHELL KNOB, Mo. The names of four people treated for injuries caused by a boat explosion have been released.
The Central Crossing Fire Department responded to a boat explosion at King's River Marina, near Shell Knob, Mo, Saturday afternoon.
Felicia C. Tudor, 62, of Verona Mo., and Virginia A. Zielinski, 55, of Aurora, Mo. were both treated at Springfield's Mercy hospital for moderate injuries.
Norman D. Tudor, 63 of Verona, Mo., and Kenneth A. Zielinski, 59, of Aurora, Mo. were both treated at Springfield's Mercy hospital for minor injuries.
Chief Rusty Rickard of Central Crossing Fire Department says that the call came in around 1:15 p.m., and confirms that several were injured. The exact cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
Chief Rickard says the boaters had fueled their boat at King's River Marina. After they had completed fueling, they had trouble getting the boat started. The boat was cranking, but not starting, which is when the boat exploded, according to Chief Rickard.
The boat is estimated to be about 23 to 25 feet long, and had a small sleeping cabin in the front.
Central Crossing sent their fire boat out immediately to respond to the call. The department fought the fire from land and water.
The fire was extinguished within an hour. Chief Rickard says the quick thinking of marina staff members also helped in fighting the fire, saying in part that they worked quickly to get fire extinguishers and shut off fuel at the dock.
