Police arrest man for attempted rape on Missouri State University campus

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. -- Officers say arrest led to charges in an attempted rape investigation on the Missouri State University campus.

Gregory E. Morton, Jr., 32, of Springfield, is a registered sex offender. He faces first-degree burglary, unlawful use of a weapon and first-degree rape. A judge ordered him jailed without bond.

Police responded to Cheek Hall on South National on the morning of May 23. A Missouri State University employee said she had been assaulted by a man in the bathroom. She told officers he suddenly grabbed her. She struggled, then escaped. Police say Morton then ran out of Cheek Hall. Officers arrested him a short time later.
