New information on Nixa school resource officer's death

NIXA, Mo. -- The school resource officer for Nixa's Junior High has died. Officer Shane Ribbing passed away earlier this week-- at the age of 33.

The school system originally sent out a message to parents about Ribbing's death on Friday, but soon after they added more details because the limited amount of information led to a host of rumors.

Here is the updated statement from the district:

"The faculty and staff of Nixa Public Schools are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Officer Shane Ribbing...We encourage you to be especially sensitive and prepared to offer support to your child during this time. Over the next few days, encourage your child to express his or her feelings and listen attentively. Thank you for your concern and support during this difficult time."

Reports say Officer Ribbing had publicly shared his family's struggles and victories when the couple's 3-year-old daughter was diagnosed with cancer. Emma had been a patient at St. Jude Hospital. She is currently cancer-free.
