Jay Ashcroft, son of ex-governor, wins Republican secretary of state primary

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. Missouri Republicans moved a second generation Ashcroft closer to a new job in Jefferson City.

Jay Ashcroft won the Republican nomination for secretary of state, outpolling State Sen. Will Kraus and Roi Chinn.

Ashcroft is a son of John Ashcroft, who served as Missouri state auditor, attorney general, governor, and U.S. Senator before serving as President George W. Bush's first U.S. attorney general.

Jay Ashcroft will face Democrat Robin Smith in November.
