SPRINGFIELD, Mo. Dickerson Park Zoo and the Tropical Asia zookeepers welcomed a new Asian elephant on Friday.
Hugo, an eight-year-old elephant from the Endangered Arc Foundation in Hugo, Oklahoma, has joined the herd at Dickerson Park Zoo.
Asian elephants are critically endangered, mainly due to loss of habitat and poaching. Hugo came to Dickerson Park Zoo to increase the genetic diversity of the elephant population in the United States.
Hugo will be in quarantine for at least a month. During this time, he will be introduced to Patience, a female elephant. The goal is for both Hugo and Patience to be on exhibit together.
