Deputy Lachlan Hicks assisted in the birth of Levi Thomas Tuesday.

The mother stopped at the intersection of U.S. 160 and Guinn Road, knowing she was not going to make it to a hospital.

"I was not expecting him to come that fast," Katie Burton, mom, said.

Deputy Hicks happened to be in the neighborhood. The deputy got there just in time to catch little Levi.

"I was sitting in my patrol car and there was a green Dodge sitting in front of me," Hicks said. "As soon as I looked at that green Dodge, dispatch came over the radio and broadcasted that there was a female in labor and she would be in a green Dodge."

Hicks says he knew what to do. His wife delivered a baby girl just six weeks ago.

"I felt a duty to Katie, you know, the mom, to make sure she was as comfortable as she could be in a passenger seat," Hicks said. "Because, you know, after being with my wife, I knew what she was going through."

It did not take long for Burton to deliver baby Levi. Hicks says he instantly noticed the umbilical cord was wrapped around his neck. He worked to remove it and then heard the baby cry.

"I appreciate him being there when he was. It was a godsend," Burton said.

"I 100-percent believe God has ordained my position here," Hicks said.

The sheriff's department reports the mom and baby Levi are all doing great.

"It's just the beginning of a nice long life," Burton said.
