CAMDENTON, Mo. -- A man has been fired from his job with the Camdenton R-3 School District after being formally charged by prosecutors for allegedly performing a sexual act in a school bathroom.
Charles Talley says he got a call Monday afternoon from the school saying his son wasn't in trouble, but they had to ask him questions about an incident at the school that day.
"An adult was in the bathroom with his pants around his ankles as my son walked into the bathroom," Talley told KY3/KSPR's Andrew Havranek.
That adult was Jesse DeVore, 30, a janitor at the Oak Ridge Intermediate School.
According to police, video surveillance shows DeVore walk into the bathroom at 2:15 p.m. Monday. The student walked in about 10 minutes later. Two minutes pass and the boy is back out, talking to students, visibly shaken and pointing at the bathroom.
Police say the boy told the he caught DeVore masturbating in a bathroom stall with the door open. Police say the boy used a different stall and hurried out. The school says they reported the allegations to police that afternoon.
"The employee was immediately removed from the building and the investigation is ensuing with the Camdenton Police Department," said Dr. Tim Hadfield, Superintendent of the Camdenton R-3 School District.
Even though the school says it followed protocol by escorting DeVore out of the building, Talley feels DeVore should have been in custody immediately.
Instead, DeVore went to his house where police later met up with him hours later for questioning.
"This is a school where our kids should feel safe," Talley said. "This is a place we send our kids to be safe. We send them thinking we don't have anything to worry about. Our taxes are paid to the officials to make sure that they're staying safe. There's no reason that man should have left the premises. There's no reason for that."
Police say DeVore denied the allegations, saying there were several students in the bathroom at that time messing around.
Police say the security video from the hallway does not support his version of the story.
Court documents show this isn't the first time DeVore was accused of exposing himself in front of a minor.
Police say he was a suspect in a similar investigation in 2013 for exposing himself to a child in a Walmart bathroom, which police say DeVore admitted to.
DeVore was again investigated after a similar incident outside his home in 2015. There are no charges listed for either incident.
Prosecutors have formally charged DeVore with two counts of sexual misconduct involving a child under 15 years old.
Police say no children were physically involved.
DeVore is being held on a $500,000 bond.
