The two recent mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio, and El Paso, Texas have caused bullet-resistant backpacks sales to soar. That has
parents looking for ways to protect their children in case the worst-case scenario happens.
Andy Davis, from Cherokee Firearms, says they haven’t noticed an increase in sales at their store, but they have had parents come in to ask questions. “A lot of them I think they come in and they want something to protect [their] child,” said Davis.
The biggest misconception he has to fix is that anything can be bulletproof. All the gear is bullet resistant.
When it comes to what gear you want your child to have, the price might play a role.
Bullet-resistant bookbags can cost up to five-hundred dollars. Another option that might work better is a bullet-resistant panel.
Price point depends on how much protection you want but they can start around thirty dollars. It’s important to keep in mind that they can get heavy so always check the weight and try to keep them under 1 pound.
If you do decide to use one of the bullet-resistant bags or panels talk to your child about how to use it properly.
They are designed to protect the vital organs. In an active shooter situation, they should be strapped over their chest.
Remind them if they are close to their bag in an active shooter situation to remember to grab the bag, but never go back for it. If they can run they always should.
