Stone County, Ark. deputy identified in deadly officer-involved shooting; suspect killed

NEAR MOUNTAIN VIEW, Ark. -- Arkansas State Police identified a Stone County killed in an officer-involved shooting Thursday morning.

Deputy Mike Stephen died in the shootout. Investigators have yet to identify a shooter also killed in the shootout.

The shootings happened in the area of 2020 Flag Road Thursday morning. The area is in a rural part of the county between Leslie and Mountain View. Investigators say Deputy Stephen responded to a domestic abuse call around 8:30 a.m. As he was talking to a woman, gunfire then erupted. The woman next to the deputy suffered injuries. The gunman died at the scene.

Deputy Stephen was a 20-year law enforcement veteran. He was also a U.S. Army veteran. He also served as the fire chief of the Pineville Fire Service.
