Storm Chase BlogKSPR Chief Meteorologist Kevin Lighty joined scientists from around the world for Vortex2, the most ambitious tornado research project of its kind.
Well I have made it back to Springfield, as a matter of fact I made it back around 2:00am last night. Sorry I wasn't able to make a blog post yesterday but It was kind of hectic with the storms we were following into northern Missouri. Yesterday we started out in Kearney, NE and then made our way east along I-80 to far southeast NE. This is where we waited for storms to develop and they soon did late in the afternoon. We started making our way more eastward towards far northwestern MO where supercell storms were coming right for us. Here is where it got a little crazy, as we were following a storm up around the Orgeon, Missouri area I got into baseball size hail. Yes BASEBALL. The thing was it didn't start out as pea, or dime, or quarter, it started out as BASEBALL. Not good. As a matter of fact a baseball was thrown threw my windshield. You heard correctly a baseball sized hailstone was sitting in the front passenger seat of my car. WHOOPS. Numerous chasers had their windshields demolished, luckily my didn't hinder my view of the road because it was as far to the right on the windshield as it could get.
Again remember this
That pretty much ended my chase for the day since I was heading back to Springfield anyways. I did try to get up on the storm in Gallatin, MO where they had grapefruit sized hail and a tornado. It was quite a lightning show too last night. I then made my way back to Springfield with what I considered to be a successful past several days. I look forward to putting together the stories from the past several days and showing you what all I experienced. I hope you enjoyed the blogging and tweeting. This was one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had. I am so glad that I will be able to say I was there for what may go down as one of the most famous tornadoes ever because of the Vortex2 intercept. This tornado will be looked at and scrutinized for years to comes with all the data that was recorded. I am supposed to be on vacation now, but I can't promise you anything because tomorrow looks like we may have severe weather here or into east central KS. Hmmm here we go again. >
