Tornado Threat Continues

By KSPR Weather

***UPDATE @ 1:40 AM***

For those wondering about our audio...when we took a power bump earlier tonight we lost our audio signal on our analog over-the-air signal. Folks on most cable systems and satellite should still be able to hear us.

With that said, we are keeping a close eye on several tornadic thunderstorms one of which is moving from around the Monett area toward the Greene County line. Residents of Springfield should keep a close eye on this storm as it continues to push northeast VERY quickly at 60 miles per hour. Another tornadic thunderstorm is moving north of Ava through northern Douglas County into Wright County and parts of Texas County as well.

Keep you reports coming and also if you have any pictures send them to weather@kspr.com. Thanks for watching tonight and stay safe.

KSPR Weather Team

----------------------------------

previous entry

A very active overnight is ahead. We still have a line of potentially tornadic thunderstorms lined up from McDonald County through Barry and Christian Counties northeastward toward Fort Leonard Wood. This line is only SLOWLY moving east through the night so the tornado threat will continue over much of the area and points east and major flooding is possible as some areas may see 6-7+ inches by the time the storm winds down by tomorrow morning.

Kevin just mentioned on-air that we are watching cells form out ahead of the line which have a chance to quickly turn tornadic. This is really what we will be keeping an eye on through the next few hours. We'll stay here until the threat ends. Continue with your comments and questions and hopefully some of our regular bloggers can answer them. We've just been swamped tonight with more than 40 warnings.

See that we have another Valerie, so thought I'd clarify. Had that one strong thunderstorm come through; that was when I got off the computer. Then there was lightning and rain through the night.I have not been out today, but you can pretty well bet that there was some flooding. Fortunately the large cell that came through last night did not have time to turn tornadic before it reached us. I pray that this morning finds you tired, but safe. Thank you for going above and beyond!

On a side note to the 1967 out break of storms. There were only 2 tornado's and 3 deaths from what I could find. Sorry for the name typo :)~

I'm a single mother of 4 and we live off of Walnut Lawn and Golden, so to say I was scared is an understatement. I have always depended on "the other" local news station until tonight. Thanks to your continuous coverage and details, I was able to stay informed enough to keep my cool in front of the kids and keep them calm. Thanks to all of you at KSPR, we managed to stay safe through the worst storm we have ever seen. A BIG THANK YOU to all of you at our new news station from all 5 of us!!!

Just got off work and had to drive by Glenstone and Chestnut. The former flea market building there had the windows blown out and the Krispy Kreme sign is down. The Harry Cooper Bldg is a wreck. So much debris. Thanks for the continous coverage. You are truely life savers.

You guys should give Natalie Nunn a hard time! When you brought her on the air to explain some of the video she got while driving around-- she was talking about a telephone pole and how it was hanging so low that you couldn't drive under it----well right before she said that--a car drove by!!!! Way to go Natalie! haha WE LOVE YOU!

Oh my gosh. You guys just posted a picture of AT&T's construction company crew and it completely fell flat. My husband works for them... that is his work place. This is really bad because that is the crew and the trucks that would be repairing all the downed lines in this area... my gosh, I can't believe my husband's place of work was destroyed.

I also saw the funnel from my home at sunshine and campbell. Saw it going by bass pro. And saw the transformers going off. went for a little drive over by the park off of kimbrough to check on my brother. Numerous tree limbs and basketball goals in the roadway. Saw some flooding over the roadway in that area too. Be very careful out there everyone. Thank you again kevin and josh. Very informative.

I live at Sunset and Battlefield and I saw the funnel cloud as did my brother who lives near Battlefield and Campbell. I also saw green lighting shortly after the worst past my area. The funnel was so low that I couldn't see the bottom of it from my second story balcony because of the other apartment building across the parking lot. I've never seen anything like that before, I could actually see the funnel rotating. Thank you so much for keeping so many people safe throughout this crazy night

Tuesday, Jan 8 at 2:41 AM Kevin Foster wrote ...

When this large front came through Neosho (20 miles south of Joplin) - it came with great strength and very high winds. It covered the entire county in about 15 minutes. I noticed that all the existing storms at the time changed their course from NE to almost straight East. At least one tornado snuffed out as this front hit it. Perhaps this storm will cut off the supercells still in process of creating tornadoes. But these winds are strong enough to make driving 18 wheelers dangerous.

Tuesday, Jan 8 at 2:24 AM Josh deBerge wrote ...

Mark...in layman's terms...yes that is what is happening. That last line of storms could very well be severe with very gusty winds and some small hail. Then just some rain for the rest of the night behind it.

Tuesday, Jan 8 at 2:20 AM Mark wrote ...

It looks like on radar that the cold front is blowing out the storms like a candle. In laymans terms is that what the front is doing essentially?
