Teen reports man failed to warn her about his HIV status

According to the police report, the teenager said she had consensual, unprotected intercourse with the 20-year-old man for two months in the summer of 2011.

Lawrence, Ind.

The Lawrence Police Department is investigating after a 17-year-old female told police she may have contracted the HIV virus after sleeping with a man she met online.

It all started when Elaina Wilson met James Propes on a social dating site over the summer. The pair had unprotected sex for about two months and broke up.

Elaina hadn't given Propes a second thought until Valentine's Day when her mother received an e-mail that would change their lives forever.

"I peeked over her shoulder and all I saw was James Propes has HIV.

"I grabbed my heart and and I couldn't breath and I start to fall to the floor," said Elaina Wilson.

The e-mail was from a woman Elaina says contacted HIV from Propes. She said she knows of at least two others who have also been affected.

"She just hit the floor crying and I started trembling and crying and I was so scared," said Kristina Wilson.

Elaina said Propes admitted to being HIV positive when she confronted him.  She also claimed he threatened her if she called police.

Elaina immediately went to Planned Parenthood to get tested.

"It felt like five to six years that 20 minutes I had to wait for test results," she said.

Her test results came out negative but she said worries others might not be as lucky.

"I'm just terrified anyone could have it."

While Propes admits he is HIV positive, he said he didn't always know he was infected.

"Some of them I slept with but I didn't find out I had HIV until afterwards," said Propes.

Propes said once he discovered he was HIV positive, he made sure to tell his sexual partners beforehand.

"I've told all of the women I've been with, whether it's been a one night stand or not. I have told all of them that I have it," said Propes.

He said he's recently stopped visiting what he calls one night stand websites and is now in a serious relationship.

"That's kind of why I did stop because it was wrong and I'm like whoa something like that could happen even though it hasn't happened. Something like that could happen and then I'm screwed."

At the moment, Propes is only being investigated but doesn't face charges.
