  3. Janice Boyko, 59, of Brentwood

    Janice Boyko, 59, of Brentwood, passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug. 29, 2011, at the Jefferson Regional Medical Center. Born Dec. 18, 1951, in McKeesport, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Martha (Michlo) Boyko. Survived by sister Audrey, brother-in-law Albert, and nephews Jonathan and Derek Podlesny of West Mifflin. Also survived by brother Thomas Boyko of Sarasota, Fla. Janice was a graduate of California University of Pennsylvania and Duquesne University. She retired after more than 30 years service as a South Allegheny school teacher and was still and an active member of the PTA. She was the current vice president of council in Brentwood and served on the board and involved with many civic and social organizations. An avid runner of road races, trail runs, marathons, and ultra marathons, she was active in the West Penn Track Club and the South Park Runners. Janice raised thousands of dollars for the Special Olympics, Cystic Fibrosis, Leukemia Society, and American Cancer Society by running. She was the long-time race director of the Brentwood Firecracker Race and the ACS, Relay for Life, Race for the Moon and the Stars. Janice also owned a home in Somerset County and was active with the Laurel Hill State Park Volunteers and the Maple Summit Snowmobile Club. Janice was lector, youth group and festival volunteer at Saint Sylvester Parish. A lifetime member of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association, she received a “Fraternalist-in-Action” award from the National Fraternal Congress of America. Family and friends will be received at the John F. Slater Funeral Home, Inc., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227 on Thursday from 3 to 8 p.m. Funeral prayer on Friday morning at 11:15 a.m.  Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Saint Sylvester Church, 3754 Brownsville Road, Brentwood, on Friday at noon. Interment will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Union Cemetery, New Centerville, PA. Family and friends meet at the cemetery.  Please send condolences to www.johnfslater.com.
