    Springfield City Council members could soon decide if they will change the city's discrimination ordinance to include rights for gays. Under the current non-discrimination ordinance age, race, creed, color, disability, religion, sex, national origin, and ancestry are protected.

    A judge sentenced Frankie Maybee, 20, and Sean Popejoy, 19, both of Green Forest, Arkansas, for their roles in committing federal hate crimes. They are the first defendants to be sentenced under the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act, enacted in October 2009.

  9. After an ACLU Complaint, Springfield Changes Policy for Police Protection Fees During Parades

    The city of Springfield is changing its policy on who pays for police fees during a parade. A warning from the American Civil Liberties Union sparked the change. Members of the ACLU told city leaders they must either charge everyone or no one for police protection. “It was recently brought to our attention by the ACLU that we have been in violation of case law,” City Manager Greg Burris wrote in a letter to six organizations.
