  3. Attorneys and Senator: It is Time to Make the Punishment Fit the Crime, Criminal Code Changes Possible

Lawmakers could soon make changes to Missouri's criminal laws that one senator says are outdated. Missouri legislators have not updated the state’s criminal code for more than 30 years. Mount Vernon Senator Jack Goodman is asking lawmakers to create a joint legislative committee to recommend the first comprehensive overhaul of the state criminal code. “Certainly there are threats to public safety, technology has changed, there are new drugs and drugs that weren’t prevalent or anticipated in the 1970’s,” Goodman said. He says legislators must take a look at new technologies like Facebook and how they can be used to facilitate a crime. “I’m hoping we are going to make some good progress this session,” Goodman said.
