Stander Leads Republic to Show-Me Showdown

By Mike Scott

The Republic boys held off Bolivar 54-52 Saturday afternoon at Hammons Student Center in a thrilling class 4 quarterfinal matchup. The Tigers now advance to the state semifinals where they'll face Kearney Friday night 8:20 pm at Mizzou Arena in Columbia.

Senior Kevin Stander led the Tigers with 18 points, but it was fellow senior Josh Morrow with the game winning shot. Tied at 52 in the final 5 seconds, Stander drove to the basket, missing on a 10 foot fade away shot from the baseline, but it was Morrow there for the putback and the win.

Bolivar senior Preston Guiot was outstanding in the loss, scoring a game high 24 points. Dalton Kelly added 18 points in the loss.

New high schools are apparently good luck for Republic. The Tigers won state in 1964, finished 2nd in 1980, and are back at state this year after builing a brand new school.
