The St. Louis Cardinals made a move to bolster their playoff chances Saturday night by trading for Cleveland Indians 3rd baseman Mark DeRosa. St. Louis sends former right handed reliever Chris Perez to the Indians along with a player to be named later.
The 34-year-old DeRosa is hitting .270 this season, but ranks among the leagues best against left handed pitching, a spot the Cardinals rank 2nd to last in all of Major League Baseball.
DeRosa will wear the number 7 for St. Louis. He made his Cardinal debut Sunday against the Twins playing left field, but is expected to play primarily at 3rd base. DeRosa can play all 4 infield positions along with the outfield.
DeRosa is in the final year of a $5.5 million dollar contract. He's played for the Braves, Rangers, Cubs, and Indians during his pro career.
Former Springfield Cardinal Chris Perez was once considered the closer of the future in St. Louis, but has dropped on the depth chart this season. The 23 year old was 1-1 with a 4.18 ERA and 30 strikeouts in 29 appearances for St. Louis this season.
