In a battle of opening day starters, Springfield sent righty Scott Gorgen to hill looking to avenge his 1-0 loss on Thursday against Frisco. AJ Griffin got the call for Midland.
After a scoreless first inning, Midland scored first for the third straight game. Josh Horton delivered a one out double, Anthony Aliotti, Gorgen’s good friend no less, blooped a double to center field to score the first run of the game.
AJ Griffin was as good as good could Tuesday afternoon firing six no-hit innings while striking out eight. He did not allow a Cardinal hitter to reach base until the 5th inning when Tommy Pham drew a two out walk.
Scott Gorgen was equally as good allowing just the one run on three hits while striking out six in six innings of work.
With Griffin out of the game in the 7th and James Simmons in, Springfield took advantage and then some. Greg Garcia led off with a walk and was sacrifice to second base. After a wild pitch moved him to third and Xavier Scruggs drew a walk, Adam Melker lined the first hit of the game into left field to score Garcia to tie the game 1-1. Another wild pitch moved the runners up to second and third. Tommy Pham then delivered a two-run single to left to put the Cardinals in front 3-1.
Springfield added two more in the 8th as Jake Shaffer brought home Rainel Rosario and Jose Garcia with a two-run single to center to make it a 5-1 lead.
The Cardinals bullpen handled the game from there as Keith Butler threw 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win and Sam Freeman got the last four outs allowing an unearned run in the 9thto pick up his first save of the season in a 5-2 victory.
Springfield will hit the road for the first time this season as they will head to Frisco, Texas to begin a three game series Thursday. The Cardinals will send lefty John Gast to the mound against Miguel De Los Santos of the RoughRiders.
The Redbirds will return to Hammons Field Thursday, April 19th to begin divisional play against the Tulsa Drillers. 2,000 fans will receive a Replica World Series Ring.
