CHADWICK, Mo. -- The Sparta Lady Trojans extended their win streak to 17 on Thursday night, defeating the Chadwick Lady Cardinals 60-53. Sparta, having soundly defeated Chadwick earlier in the season, looked to be on their way to another win by halftime. The Lady Trojans jumped out early on Chadwick, but the Lady Cardinals got back within four, 24-20 midway through the second quarter. The Lady Trojans then went on a 17-6 run, giving them the momentum at the half with a 41-26 lead.
"We did not play with much intensity in the second quarter and it cost us." said Chadwick coach Darin Meinders.
Sparta, mid-way through the third quarter, was up 17 points, 50-33. That is when Chadwick started their comeback. Sparta turnovers and Chadwick three-pointers put the Lady Cardinals down by only 5 with six minutes to go in the game. "We had an opportunity to put it away, but we let them creep back into it. They've got enough three point shooters to get back in it, and they did," said Sparta coach Jerry Songer.
"We could have easily laid down and got blow out tonight," said Coach Meinders. "I'm proud of my girls, they way they fought back. We were down 56-50 with the ball and 30 seconds left. We make that shot and it's a different game."
Sparta made six free throws down the stretch and held on to win the game 60-53.
"Anytime we come to Chadwick it's going to be a physical game. They created a lot of turn overs, I don't think we played very well at all. I give Chadwick credit for making us turn the ball ove," said Songer. "We got a win here and I'm happy with it but I think this game showed what we need to work on."
Leading the Lady Cardinals (12-5) was Senior Jamie Hale with 24. Leading the Lady Trojans (18-1) was Freshman Cailyn Long with 23.
