REPUBLIC, MO - Nick Yocum is trading in his Republic orange for SBU purple. The senior point guard signed his national letter of intent Thursday to play basketball at NCAA D-II Southwest Baptist University this fall.
Yocum was quick to thank his family, friends and teammates for their support.
"They've helped me out to get where I am today," said Yocum. "It just means quite a bit for them to be here and support me."
A 2-time all-state player, Yocum averaged 17 points and 2.7 assists per game as 1 of only 2 seniors for the Tigers last season. He helped lead Republic to a Class 4 Final Four appearance in 2010 and a Blue and Gold championship in 2011.
Despite being listed at just 5'10", Yocum says SBU head coach Jeff Guiot was not concerned.
"He didn't care about my size. I'll do whatever it takes to get better. I'll just be as good as I can be."
Guiot was first turned on to Yocum in 2010 when his son Preston (also 5'10") faced off against Yocum and the Tigers in the state quarterfinals, a game Republic went on to win.
"What they lack in size, they make up in heart and toughness," said Guiot, who expects the pair to play side-by-side at times next season.
"He's a tough kid. He's got a great basketball IQ and passion for the sport."
Yocum chose the Bearcats over interest from William Jewell, Evangel, John Brown, Drury and Missouri S&T.
