MARSHFIELD, MO - After 3 seasons as an assistant, Nick Codutti takes the reigns at Marshfield High School, replacing Stan McGarvey. Codutti enherits a very experienced squad in his first head coaching position.
HEAD COACH: Nick Codutti, 1st season
2011 RECORD: 5-5
RETURNING STARTERS: 8 offense, 9 defense
PLAYERS TO WATCH: Blayne Armstrong (Jr. QB), Spencer Gregoire (Sr. OL), Willie Totten (Jr. WR), Zach Dudenhoeffer (Jr. LB/WR)
The Blue Jays have found themselves squarely in the middle of the 7-team Central Ozark Conference Small Division the past 3 seasons. This fall, Codutti and the Jays are ready to move up.
"The past 3 years we've been right at .500 and very close to closing the gap," said Codutti. "That's what we're hoping to do this season."
Experience won't be a problem. The Jays return 8 starters on offense, including 4 of 5 offensive lineman, led by left guard Spencer Gregoire.
"We're looking for them to be the strength and solid base for this team."
Junior quarterback Blayne Armstrong returns under center for his 3rd season of action. The 6'4" protypical drop back passer was 2nd in the conference in passing last season as a sophomore. He's not only a very talented passer, but also a great team leader.
"He's definitely getting some college looks and he's done a great job leading this team."
Defending state champ Rogersville, defending conference champ Bolivar, and perennial contender Catholic all lose some very talented players, something the Jays are looking to capitalize on.
"Hopefully we can take our leadership and experience and capitalize on it."
The Jays open the season August 24th at Willard (Codutti's alma mater). Week 2, they host another COC Large opponent, Republic. The conference opener is September 7th at Reeds Spring.
