SPRINGFIELD, MO – Evangel University football has announced five transfers into the program this spring including Missouri State transfer Mitchell Jenkins. The former all-state quarterback out of Hillcrest High School has enrolled at Evangel University this semester.
Jenkins (6-3, 210) played at Missouri State last season appearing in one game at quarterback going 1 for 4 for nine yards passing and had one carry for six yards against Cotton Bowl winner Arkansas on Sept. 3. Jenkins redshirted his first year at Missouri State in 2010 and completed his freshman year last season. He was a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference Honor Roll and was on the Athletic Director’s Honor Roll with a grade point average of 3.5 through his first year at Missouri State as a Biology major. Jenkins will play at Evangel next season as a sophomore.
At Hillcrest, Jenkins led the Hornets to the school’s first ever state playoff win in 2009 and threw for 2,775 yards, 35 touchdowns while going 156 for 299 in pass attempts. He also rushed for 570 yards and 7 touchdowns. Jenkins was an All-State performer in Class 4, in addition to being named All-Ozark Conference, All-District and he was an All-Ozarks selection by the Springfield News-Leader. Jenkins also played baseball at Hillcrest and was on their 2010 Class 5 state championship basketball team. He posted a 3.9 grade point average in high school and was a three-time all-state academic honoree.
“Mitch fits into our offensive really well,” said Evangel head football coach Brenton Illum. “There’s no question he can play at a higher level, but I think he is a better fit for our system and our schemes.”
Another transfer joining Jenkins is Otis Brown, a wide receiver transferring from Ball State University. Brown (5-9, 179), redshirted his first season at Ball State in 2009 and played in 10 games in 2010 compiling 247 yards and three touchdowns with 19 receptions. Brown redshirted again last season at Ball State and will be a sophomore for the Crusaders next season.
Evangel has also added wide receivers Chris Smith and Michael Bowman out of Fayetteville High School in Arkansas. Both were enrolled last year at Fresno City Community College in California last fall but were not on their active football roster. Smith (6-2, 170) was on Fayetteville’s 2010 state runner-up team in Class 7A and was an all-conference and All-Northwest Arkansas selection in 2010. Bowman graduated from Fayetteville HS in 2008 and was a key member of their 2007 7A State Championship team in his junior season. Bowman (6-1, 180) was an all-conference selection as a wide receiver and defensive back for the Bulldogs. Both will be freshman next season.
The Crusaders have also added offensive lineman Antonio Green from Dublin, Georgia. Green (6-3, 300) was an All-Region selection out of West Laurens High School in 2010. He originally signed with Valdosta State (Ga.) but did not attend the school and will be a freshman for Evangel next season.
“Green could be a future star,” said Illum. “He is a likeable guy with a lot of athletic potential.”
Illum and Evangel University athletics will be announcing additional signees with a future news release within the next several weeks.
