SPRINGFIELD, MO - After failing to qualify for the state tournament as a freshman, Republic sophomore Dylan Bekemeier more than made up for it by winning the class 3 state golf title at Rivercut Golf Course Tuesday afternoon.
Bekemeier backed up his even par opening round 72 with an amazing 4-under 68 on Tuesday.
"I would say today was one of the best rounds of my life, so to have it today was pretty special," said Bekemeier.
Island Green Golf Course in Republic is Bekemeier's home course, but Rivercut is a close 2nd. His familiarity with the course helped him to what he called his best putting round ever, including a 60-foot birdie putt on 17.
"I was just saying get it close; just get it close so you don't 3-putt, and I ended up making it."
Bekemeier won the tournament by 4 strokes over a pair at 1-over. Rogersville's Alec Palen led all other local competitors with a 2-day total of 146 (+2). Monett's Jacob Fair and Rogersville's Robert Mahaffey Jr. also earned all-state honors, tying for 12th place with a 5-over total 149.
