Not the biggest, strongest, or fastest, a familiar tune for underdog athletes everywhere. The Nixa Lady Eagles have the talent to make a state championship run, but more than anything they need their sometimes overlooked point guard to lead the way. Bethany Funderburk is this weeks Wendy's High School Athlete of the Week.
Talent is judged on physical skills, winners are guaged on heart.
Nixa head coach Jim Middleton said, "she's a competitor first and foremost. She loves to play, that's her thing."
Overlooking Bethany Funderburk is not an option. The 5-8 point guard will beat you anywhere on the court, any way she can. Funderburk said, "I just want to be aggressive, try my hardest."
Only a junior, funderburk has already eclipsed 1-thousand career points. All-district, all-ozarks, all-state, funderburks attention is now turned to a new goal.
"Personally, i'd love to go to state one of these years."
Loaded with college bound talent, funderburk's role with the Lady Eagles has shifted this season.
"I'm not scoring as much because we have so many people that can score. I'm just trying to be more of a team person."
Averaging a team high 13 points a game, Funderburk led the Lady Eagles to a very strong 2nd place showing at this weeks KTXR Lady Classic. More than just stats however, Funderburk was seen diving all over the court, pulling down rebounds between defenders 6 inches taller, and of course her patented head down drive to the basket.
Middleton said, "you look at her stature and say what's she doing going in on the bigs? she gets to the basket as well as the free throw line which is a big part." A coaches dream come true, and the focal point of nixa's state title hopes. Bethany Funderburk is this weeks Wendy's High School Athlete of the Week.
