Evangel University softball swept the Heart of America conference Player and Pitcher of the Week awards this week. Hannah Somers, a junior outfielder from Lawrence, Kansas was named Player of the Week while her teammate Tori Sizemore, a freshman pitcher from Denton, Texas was named Pitcher of the Week.
Sizemore pitched in two games for Evangel last week and fired a no-hitter in one of them. In her second game of the week, Sizemore no-hit William Penn (Iowa) and struck out 15 of the 24 batters she faced in a 4-0 win. Against Our Lady of the Lakes University, she gave up seven hits and three runs while striking out seven. Sizemore posted a 0.54 earned run average with a 2-0 record during the week.
Somers went 7 for 13 at the plate in the four games. Five of Somers’ seven hits were extra base hits. She also drove in six runs and blasted 3 home runs, including 2 homers in a game against Our Lady of the Lakes University in San Antonio, Texas. Somers posted a .538 average for the week.
Evangel is 7-6 overall and will begin HAAC play Thursday March 18 against Lindenwood in St. Charles, Mo.
