Nascar's McMurray and Wallace Racing in Springfield

By Mike Scott

Nascar drivers Jamie McMurray and Kenny Wallace will appear at Springfield Raceway Thursday night. Earlier this week we spoke with the Joplin native McMurray about his Sprint Cup experience.

Bordertown Casino will sponsor the event marking McMurray’s first public appearance since he made the move from Joplin to North Carolina in 1999. Jamie began his racing career as a youngster racing go-karts at Springfield Raceway, which was then called Airport Speedway.

St. Louis native Kenny Wallace will join McMurray on October 1st and will be racing his Jeg’s Sponsored Modified against the local racers. The evening will also feature the Raceway’s “Raining Money” promotion, where $1,000 in $1 dollar bills fall from the sky with 30 lucky fans getting the chance to pick-up as many bills as possible.

Both McMurray and Wallace will be meeting the fans with a special autograph session from 5:00 – 6:00pm. After the autograph session McMurray will host a question and answers session on the front straight away, while Wallace prepares to strap into his Modifed racecar. Fans will get to see three divisions of racing with A-Modifieds battling for a $1,000 to win feature, Sport Mods racing for $400 to win and the Legends Cars fight it out for $250 to win.

Another element of the evening will be a Auction of an Autism themed race car body. Jamie McMurray and his Foundation are heavily involved with Autism awareness as his family has been affected by the condition. Co-Owners Jerry Hoffman and Doug Bland are excited about this NASCAR night in the hub of Southwest Missouri and are hoping that it will lead to even more ventures. “Springfield has a lot of roots in the NASCAR world and we hope to continue that tradition”. “Bringing Jamie into the area for the first time since he made it into Cup Racing is a big deal, since Jamie doesn’t make many local short track appearances” stated Doug Bland.

Raining money participants will be picked from the ticket stubs numbers and will have the opportunity to pick up their share of the $1,000 in money as it rains from the sky.

Gate open at 4:00PM on Thursday October 1st with hot laps at 6:30 and racing action starting at 7:00PM. Tickets will be $15 for adults and $5 for children or more information on this event or any events at the Springfield Raceway log on to the tracks official website. www.springfieldraceway.com
