Bethune Beach: JB's Fish Camp for fresh seafood, regional charm
Itís not much more than a shack with a dock and a boat ramp on the Indian River Lagoon, and that's its charm. JBís Fish camp is a bustling little restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, serving fresh, locally harvested seafood in classic crabshack style with a fresh sheet of kraft paper rolled out on tables to catch your shells. Crabs, clams and oysters are taken right out of the Indian River from JBís own leaseholds.
You can also launch a boat, kayak or canoe here for access to the lagoon, or you can fish off the dock for redfish and mangrove snapper. Boats often come in from the lagoon after a day of fishing for an afternoon snack and a beer.
Bethune Beach, where JB's is located, will remind you more of North Carolinaís Outer Banks than Floridaís coast. Homes are built on stilts along narrow streets leading to the beach. And itís the northern (less popular) gateway to Canaveral National Seashore. You can drive through the national park for miles without seeing much more than an armadillo. Or two.
