KSPR Follow Up: Why Mtn Grove killer was free, and what he wrote to a judge

By KSPR News

Police say a man walked into a Mountain Grove home killing three people before turning the gun on himself. Nearly a week after that murder suicide, KSPR looked through several years’ worth of court documents to see why the convicted criminal wasn’t behind bars.

The prosecutor says Harold “Sonny” Mead Jr. was free on bond. Mead was waiting to see if the state would revoke his probation but that hearing couldn't come fast enough for the three victims.

KSPR discovered letters written by Mead that may explain his state of mind when he killed his wife, her sister, and their mother. In the months leading up to the triple murder suicide inside a Mountain Grove home, Mead wrote the judge handling his probation revocation. Mead wrote he was hearing voices telling him to hurt himself. Mead's dad also wrote the judge saying his son was bi-polar and not taking the proper medication.

Wright County Prosecutor Jason MacPherson says, “I never saw this coming out of Sonny Mead. I didn't see him as a violent person. I knew he had problems with depression and substance abuse," said Wright County Prosecutor Jason MacPherson.
He brought in a special prosecutor to handle Mead's most recent court cases and probation violation. MacPherson was Mead’s attorney on a felony drug charge. Mead was on probation until 2009 for that same felony drug charge. Since then, he’s been charged with felony receiving stolen property, two misdemeanor assaults and one unlawful use of drug paraphernalia. However, his probation had not been revoked.

"I've spent a lot of sleepless nights wondering what we could have done better," MacPherson said. He says nothing illegal or negligent was done but he says hindsight is 20/20.
"His prior offenses were property offenses, stealing animals, drug offenses," the prosecutor said.
Even though Mead hadn't been charged with violent crimes, he was arrested for trespassing at the same home he killed his estranged wife April Mead, April's mother Ellen Loman, and April's 10-year-old sister Lakeisha Davault.

Earlier this year Mead was also charged with assaulting his parents on the same day he tried to commit suicide. MacPherson says his probation was not revoked because the victims were not cooperating. Mead was supposed to have a probation revocation hearing on the day of the killings but it was continued by Mead's public defender so she could prepare her case.
“You can what if forever. What if he would have died when he tried to kill himself?" MacPherson said.
The prosecutor says he will continue to “what if" while he goes over the case with a fine tooth comb.
“This will weigh heavily on my mind whenever someone asks for bail because this can happen even when you don't expect it," MacPherson said.

Since April Mead had filed for an order of protection against Harold Mead Jr. two days before her death, the prosecutor wants to start a program that would give law enforcement officers a list of order of protections that have been filed. He says that way officers can keep an eye out for potential violence. MacPherson also says he wants to have all reported incidents, even those that might not lead to charges, be filed in court cases of defendants who are on probation. MacPherson says in this case they didn't know all of the facts to prevent this from happening.

I was just reading the comments, the statement Jason made to you, I think is against the law. I also see you didn't get a comment back after your trip to Jeff. City, what is wrong with that man! I had a friend in the same boat you are in, it is a money game! I wish you the best of luck in your quest! I have a feeling LOL was either Jason or someone from his office. (Good Luck.)

All the energy that has been wasted on this sight would have been better spent in prayer for everyone involved. If any of you have ever had to deal with watching the torment of someone you love deal with a mental illness and know how little help there is for them in this part of the state you have a better picture of the torment that Sonny's family and other families like theirs are have to live with.It is a tragic loss for all.He had children that loved them all.Their lives have the great void.

I may not be a huge fan of Mr Macpherson but Donna, in this case he is right about the Paul Harvey comment. It was Douglas County, not Wright County. He made the comment over the murder of that lady that her hands were cut off and her teeth removed to keep her from being identifed. Also Donna, I see you on a lot of comment sites complaining and writing Very ugly comments about all kinds of other people. Do you have anger issues also??? From your case.net site maybe they should be watching you!

So you want to take this to a personnel level! PAUL HARVEY-was WRIGHT COUNTY! Your wasting tax-payers money, when I'm found NOT GUILTY in SEPT! Just like TOM B. a month ago in Douglas County, you wouldn't even adress the JURY-you little weasel! You took over, right where Larry Tryell left off, trying to persecute me and others on BOGUS charges! Be well aware all tax-payers are innocent till found guilty by a court and NOT BY YOU!!! XOXO! THANK YOU!

I'm reminded of the old adage, "Believe none of what you hear and half of what you see." The FOUR people charged with murder in February in DOUGLAS county are still in jail, IN DOUGLAS COUNTY, awaiting trial as they have been since they were arrested. Paul Harvey's comment was likewise about DOUGLAS county, NOT Wright county. Donna, in the interests of full disclosure I think you should state that you're one of those self-proclaimed "innocent" people I'm busying prosecuting.

I think it's safe to say the system DID fail here, no matter which side of the fence you're on with this. There were so many things that could have been done. No you can't predict what someone might do, BUT there ARE warning signs and the FACT is that wife beaters and drugs have become such the norm around here that THEY ARE ignored by the department. So much legal red tape, not enough QUALIFIED people to handle these types of things. this is a serious issue here and it needs to addressed

Just when ,and how is the sheriff going to look into each case ,they need more employees and a bigger jail ,and if you think those 3 people are not in jail because of who they are ,you couldn't be more wrong ! Unless your in the court room ,maybe you should keep your mouth shut!

To DUMBFOUNDED, I heard the same thing! It's all who you are and who you know! PAUL HARVEY had said many times on the radio-if you want to commit murder and get away with it-go to WRIGHT COUNTY MISSOURI! If SONNY had of made it to the system-he probably would have gotten a slap on the wrist anyway! The judges and prosecutor are to busy trying to convict the innocent and let the guilty off scott FREE! If the SHERRIFF would investigate each case, check back-grounds , they could stop ALOT!

I think the reason so many people are saying the system failed, is because if you look up all the information about Harold Mead Jr on case net, you just can't understand how a person with that much history of trouble wasn't locked up in jail and the key throwed away! Another thought to ponder: I sure hope this is a rumor...... was told by someone that the 3 people who commited murder back in February are no longer in jail, please tell me it isn't so!

DONNA IT IS A TRAGEDY THAT ANY OF THIS WERE TO HAPPEN, BUT TO PLACE BLAME IN THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM AND SPECIFIC INDIVIDUALS IS IDIOTIC. WHY NOT PLACE BLAME ON THE INDIVIDUAL WHO DECIDED TO TAKE THE LIVES OF 3 INNOCENT VICTIMS AND HIMSELF. AND PRAY FOR THE VICTIMS OF THIS HORRIBLE CRIME VS PLAYING THE BLAME GAME. IF YOU WANT TO PLACE BLAME ON INDIVIDUALS LOOK AT THE JUDGE THAT POSTED THE BAIL AND THE PROSECUTOR THAT ACTUALLY WAS ON THE CASE.

Tuesday, Jun 17 at 6:26 PM Jason MacPherson wrote ...

Donna: Based on your conclusion that "the system failed" you seem to imply that you have factual information. I would be very interested in that. Please detail how the system failed and upon what facts you base your conclusion. The "system" was not designed to nor is it capable of preventing every possible bad occurrence from happening. If it was, bad things would never happen. Of further note, I was not the prosecutor who agreed to put Mr. Mead on probation in the first place.

Maybe ,the W.C.C.F.P. should of let that law pass for a bigger jail ,and more officers pass ,instead of black ballin it! When it comes down to it tax payers need to realize that if theres not enough officers things can't get done as fast as Wright County would like them to ,and the jail full as it is ! There is enough blame to go around .Yet people are going to have to face the fact that it takes money to hold those kind of people ,not wishes!

Tuesday, Jun 17 at 3:29 PM anonymous wrote ...

Things like this happen and cannot be predicted. Everyone should stop trying to blame others and start praying for the victims and Sonny's souls. The lawyers and police can only do so much. The police can't exactly stand guard outside of someones residence just because the have a restraining order. And the lawyers and prosecuters can only do what is within their capabilities of the law. It is truly a sad and devastating situation.

Tuesday, Jun 17 at 9:13 AM DONNA wrote ...

Evidently you admitted to being SONNY'S attorney,in the past! You knew he had problem's or you wouldn't have defended him, before you bought in a SPECIAL prosecutor! If I read your statement right-wait maybe I need my glasses on paragraph 3. Oh well, I'm not gonna argue with you, 3 lives are lost, your the one that has to live with it, bottom line is the SYSTEM FAILED APRIL and the other 2 VICTIM'S!

Monday, Jun 16 at 5:15 PM Jason MacPherson wrote ...

Donna: Maybe you didn't get it. I was not the prosecutor on the case. There was nothing I could have done even if I had the opportunity, which I did not. I had no more right, ability or authority to act on Mead's cases than any other member of the general public. The special prosecutor was appointed by 2 different judges on March 5, 2008...3 months prior to Mead's rampage. The special prosecutor was doing every thing he could to revoke Mr. Mead's probation...it's not automatic.

Monday, Jun 16 at 4:26 PM GEORGE wrote ...

Did anyone fail to see that SONNY is the one that committed the violent crimes, as in the slaying of an innocent family. THE only one to blame in this is SONNY NOT THE Attorney, cops, judges, etc.. but a crazy lunatic that should have been in jail not released on bond.

April's family should file a wrongful-death suit! The prosecutor said hind sight is 20/20, my ***! Now he wants to change things! So what if SONNY had of committed suicide, at least 3 lives would have been spared! JASON had acted as SONNY'S attorney before he became PROSECUTOR! SONNY just slipped through the system! Now JASON wants to make excuses-what if he'd done something different! COME ON! ELECTION is coming up, time for the voter's to make change's this isn't someone I'd want in office!

The Sonny Mead I knew was a fun person to be around. I knew he didn't have much ambition, but he was never a violent person. If he was truly bi-polar, then he should have been committed and treated. I feel sorry for his wife April and her family. They didn't deserve this happening to them. But, I also feel sorry for Sonny and his family as well. They too probably feel horrible and are hurting. I'll never forget that "kind and fun "Sonny that I use to know. I worry most about his soul.

Friday, Jun 13 at 7:19 PM old girlfriend wrote ...

I agree with the person who said if any one knew Sonny, they knew he was capable of violence. His mom and dad are both enablers and should have been arrested a long time ago for aiding and embedding a felon. They have done it for years and would have continued to do so. I am truly sorry for April's family!!!

Friday, Jun 13 at 1:18 PM Anonymous wrote ...

First of all I would just like to say I was a friend of April and she was a great person. Sonny has tried to control her life since they met and he has always been violent. I can not imagine why anyone who ever had any dealings with Sonny would say he was not a violent person. I think our system failed April and her family.

Thursday, Jun 12 at 2:10 PM Jackie wrote ...

I agree that his comments were contradictory. Anyone who knew anything at all about Sonny Mead knew very well what kind of person he was & that he was capable of violence. He had made threats to others before not to mention assulting his parents. If that's not being capable of violence, I don't know what is. The bottom line here is that the judicial system failed to do their jobs & 3 innocent people paid for it with their lives!

There are lot of fingersto point to.but back when he assaulted his parents his parnets sould have been the ones who should have had him put back where he belongs ( IN JAIL OR LOONEY BEN)Ihope his parents see their faces every time they close thier eyes. you to grampa mcgownd.......

This story is confusing to me. He was charged with assault on his parents, yet he has never had violent offenses? That's contradictory. Ultimately, as a woman who was stalked before, I wish the law enforcement would take restraining orders more seriously and I applaud them for issuing the list of new orders of protection. Hopefully the police department will make good on that. Perhaps our city should do this as well.
