Day Three: The Search for Plaid Shirt Robber Retraces His Steps

By KSPR News

The FBI and local authorities are entering day three of the man hunt for an alleged serial robber.

Investigators say 37-year-old Joseph Young, known as the plaid shirt robber, is behind at least 20 bank robberies across the country.

Local authorities hadn't tracked him down Friday night.

Young's run from the law in the Ozarks started after his truck was spotted in Christian County on Wednesday night.

The same deputies who tried to help catch him on Wednesday were back on his trail on Friday.

Two tips lead Christian County authorities to the Finley River banks near the Linden water access off Highway 125.

Christian County Captain Jeremy Whitehill says, "It wasn't the same guy."

The FBI says the man known as the plaid shirt robber has eluded the law more than once.

Authorities think more than 20 times across the country.

"We're offering anything the FBI needs” Whitehill said, “Whether it’s manpower, sitting on a house, transportation, stopping somebody."

While the FBI searched undisclosed wooded areas, another tip lead Christian County authorities back to search Young's sister's house in Rogersville for the second time.

Young's family didn't want to talk but neighbors are talking about the search that seems stale.

"Twenty banks and he has not got caught.” Neighbor Chris Long said, “He must be pretty smart."

Neighbors and authorities aren’t sure if young is still in the Ozarks.

"It’s interesting that someone who has pulled off the types of crimes he's committed isn't a hoodlum from some big city.” Whitehill said, “Instead he's from a rural area in the Bible belt of America."

Authorities from Minnesota, South Dakota, Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia are keeping an eye on the local search.

Because young ditched his truck near panther creek on foot, authorities are keeping a close eye on any stolen vehicles in the area.

Anyone with information should call local FBI authorities at (417)882-3303.
