FEMA deadlines approaching

By Michelle Sherwood

A center meant to help flood victims is now closed.

State and federal emergency management agencies opened a disaster recovery center at the beginning of August to help those who had flood damage between the beginning of June and mid-July.

Dozens of families in Greene County have registered with FEMA, but the numbers of people coming in had been dwindling, so the center closed Saturday.

"In a way, it's good news in that our work appears to be coming to a close here,” says Ernie Martz with FEMA. “Although there will be FEMA people on duty here, public people working our roads and bridges and so forth."

The FEMA deadline is also fast approaching for unemployment assistance. Last month, the state announced that Missourians—like farmers or self-employed people—could receive help for disaster unemployment assistance.

Those who work or live in Greene, Stone, Taney, Vernon and Webster counties could get help if they apply before August 22nd.

The number to call is 1-800-621-FEMA or go online at www.fema.gov.
