Exchanging Light Bulbs in Webster County

By Natalie Swallow

These days, it seems like nothing's free, but in Webster County, your lights could be.

With a new energy program at Webster Electric Cooperative called "Take Control and Save," customers can bring in any 10 incandescent light bulbs and get 10 compact fluorescent bulbs for free.

Larry Baker is ready to make the switch from incandescent to compact fluorescent bulbs.

"It's such a good deal. It saves you energy. It saves you buying them someplace else," Baker said.

Plus, it saves him the time of not having to change light bulbs so often.

"About every three months, they would burn out here and burn out there, and these should be able to use, well they say 5 to 10 year depending on usage," Baker said.

It saves on energy and on time, but it can also save you money, about $100 a year for the average family who uses all CFL bulbs in the house.

The CFL bulbs are only 23 watts but are equivalent to a 100 watt bulb.

The savings don't stop there.

"The incandescent bulb is probably 80 percent heat, and when you create the heat in the home and everything, during the summer months, that contributes to your air conditioning as well, so if you can get that heat out of there and put in more efficient bulb, you're saving money in two different ways," Bill Dudley from Webster Electric Cooperative said.

With time, money, and energy savings, the utility says more and more customers are making the switch.

So far, Webster Electric Cooperative has given out 7500 free CFL bulbs.

The co-op also has rebates for electric water heaters, energy star washers and dishwashers, and window air conditioning units.

If you live outside of Marshfield, the utility is bringing the bulbs your way soon.

Starting at 9 until they run out of bulbs, Webster Electric will exchange bulbs on July 15 at Apple Market in Rogersville, on July 16 at Lazy Lee's in Fordland, and on July 17 at Hannah's Quick Stop in Niangua.
