Ozarks family of 22 mourn loss of two loved ones, Branson benefit this weekend

By Emily Rittman

An Ozarks mother of 22 lost her husband and one of her sons in a matter of weeks.

The stay at home mom is trying to care for ten kids on her own for the first time.

Both tragedies struck the Chapman family less than three weeks apart.

The Ash Grove family that's dedicated their lives to giving orphans homes is now asking for a little help of their own.

Martha Chapman says, "He gave me a kiss on Thursday night and at 4 a.m. he was gone. He had a massive heart attack."

To know just how Martha’s husband, Carl Chapman, will be missed you must meet how many will miss him.

In all Martha and Carl raised 22 children.

The couple had nine children of their own.

They adopted 13 orphans from Russia and the Ukraine.

The family was first approached to be a host family.

Then after a trip to Russia, the couple knew they had to do something.

Chapman says, "It was common to see 2 and 3-year-olds running in the streets and begging for food."

Chapman says the couple never knew they’d have a double digit family.

She says they couldn’t help adopting siblings to keep broken families together.

Then on June 20th of this year, the Chapman's world turned upside down.

First, they lost Carl. "I've never worked outside my home. Taking care of my kids is all I've ever done.” Chapman said, “I feel literally lost."

Then the widow lost one of her adopted children, 14-year old Ryan Dimitry Chapman.

Chapman says, "He had headaches and was throwing up so my first thought was he had the flu.”

Instead Ryan died from complications of meningitis. Ryan died on July 9th.

Chapman says, "Ryan always had a smile on his face. He loved animals and the outdoors."

Despite feeding 10 children, clothing them, and helping them heal, the suddenly single mother has a lot more on her table.

Then another large, famous, Branson family stepped in.

The Dutton Family is hosting a benefit in honor of Carl and Ryan at the Dutton Family Theater.

The two large families have more than size in common.

Chapman says, "Our daughter Brande married Ben Dutton."

For the first time, a giving mother is asking others to give.

Chapman says, "It happened. I can't change it my husband and Ryan would want us to keep going."

The family is left with little life insurance and no medical insurance.

The family spent most of their finances on bringing orphans over from Russia.

Here's how you can help. You can attend the benefit concert at the Dutton Family Theater in Branson on Saturday, July 19th. Tickets are $15 per person or $40 dollars for a family pass. The family pass includes parents and all children under 18 living in the same household. For more information call (417) 332-2772. You can also donate to the Carl R. Chapman Memorial Fund at any Metropolitan Bank.

I hope many people will find a way to send a twenty of something. These orphans, almost orphaned again deserve a bit of support in their second country. David Cottrell www.ukraineorphans.net
