Voters Reject Tax Increases

By Brad Belote

Proposals for new taxes in southwest Missouri to pay for new jails, fire service and programs for Ozarks Technical Community College landed with a thud Tuesday.

OTC was asking voters for a levy increase to pay for expanded programs. Voters in seven counties rejected the increase, 72% opposed to 28% in favor.

Wright County voters turned down two sales tax increase to support the construction and staffing of a new jail.

Strafford Fire District voters said no to making the department full-time. A property tax increase would have helped hire 16 full-time firefighters. Chief Jerry Schiman said he thought voters were taxed out. He said he would not ask the board for another such levy as long as he was chief.

In Polk County, voters rejected a sales tax that would have paid for a new justice center.
