The next stop on KSPR and Oprah's Big Give Change Your School Challenge takes us to Crocker.
Walk into the Crocker computer lab and you'll probably hear little typing and a lot of complaining.
“It's a simple Yahoo! page. You can't get the Yahoo! page you see now .”
“It's taking a very long time today.”
“They're ancient compared to standards.”
So ancient senior Christopher Lupardis has almost grown fond of the computers.
“From elementary on up we've updated a few, but they're still out of date,” Lupardis said.
“Some of these computers have been here the nine years I've been here,” elementary teacher Andrea Branstetter added.
The Crocker School District has two computer labs, so each computer gets a lot hits.
“This one is really slow, the more you click it the longer it's going to take.”
“Oops! I got an illegal operation ... so now it’s going to close.”
Crocker doesn't have a fundraising goal. According to Branstetter any amount will help take the school out of the 90's.
“We just really need new computers the kids can use on their projects.”
Various fundraisers are going on, but the big draw seems to be the bike. It was designed by the Orange County Choppers, and the kids really want to win it.
“We've already had kids walking around saying, ‘Did you see my bike up there? That’s going to be my bicycle. They're very excited," Branstetter said.
Signs are going up around the school and Friday a city-wide block party will be held on the parking lot.
One lucky kid will pull away the winner of the bike, but in the end all students will benefit.
“It's really going to help the educational quality of our students because technology is such a big part of education these days.”
