Army Recruiter Charged with Husband's Murder

By KSPR News

A military couple have been found bleeding in the streets of a small town after a violent fight. The husband was shot to death. His wife is now charged with first degree murder.

Officers say SSgt. Stacy Lynn Powell bought a semi-automatic gun and two boxes of ammunition last week. They say she used them to kill her husband on Wednesday.

Neighbors say the military couple's deadly fight ended in the street early Wednesday morning.

Jackie Coker says, “Kids were getting ready for school. There was blood everywhere."

Investigators say Army recruiter Stacy Powell shot her husband Brian in the chest.

Neighbor Danielle Steele says the family she used to have pool parties with were fighting over a gun in her front yard. "I woke up to banging on the door and my dad went to the door. He saw them fighting and the man through him the gun." Steele’s father grabbed the gun and called 911. Steele says, “They told me to grab towels. I just tried to get what they needed."

Officers found Stacy and Brian lying next to each other in the street bleeding.
Brian was shot in the chest. Stacy's left wrist was cut by a kitchen knife. Investigators won’t say if her wounds were self inflicted.

Court documents state Stacy told officers and bystanders at the scene that she wished she had shot herself and wanted to die.

Pulaski County Sheriff J.B. King says, “We're handicapped by the fact that only two people were there. One is dead and the other isn't talking to us."

Court documents state the couple was splitting up. Brian filed for divorce on Valentine's Day.

Steele says, “I'm never going to forget it.”

Neighbors say they’re struggling to understand. They're also wondering what will happen to the couple's 17-year-old son. Coker says, “I just pray he gets through this without any more turmoil."

Stacy Powell is in a hospital in Army custody. A warrant has been issued for her arrest. Powell’s bond is set at $1million.
