Seven Schools Accept Oprah's Big Give Challenge

By Brad Belote

Seven schools in southwest Missouri have been chosen to be part of KSPR and Oprah's Big Give Change Your School Challenge. KSPR will award $10,000 to schools that raise money to improve their school and community. For two weeks, schools will raise money for a project or need in their school community. The best performing schools will be awarded thousands of dollars to complete their project. Here are the school and their projects:
Springfield Public School District – Fundraising for a freshman Mentoring Program
Crocker High School – Fundraising for New Computers
Spokane High School – Fundraising for a New Baseball Field
Fair Play High School – Fundraising for Smartboards
Willard High School – Fundraising for a Horse Therapy Program for Disabled Children
Stoutland High School – Fundraising to send Veterans to WW II Memorial in DC
Finley River School – Scholarship for Children with Autism

KSPR News will feature the schools and their efforts in April on KSPR News and kspr.com. You can watch Oprah's Big Give

I am so proud to be a Stoutland Alumni right now! When given the oportunity to raise money for the school & community, they thought of our veterans and that just shows what type of community this is. Not only will this give the teachers a real life connection for history classes, it will enable them to place a face with the word "veteran." Understanding the enormous sacrifice that our veterans, soldiers and their families make is beyond monumental!

STOUTLAND'S CAUSE MAY NOT BE FOR THE SCHOOL BUT I THINK IT S MORE IMPORTANT! MEN AND WOMEN EVERDAY ARE RISK THERE LIFES TO HELP US LIVE FREELY, WE HAVE TO PAY THEM BACK SOMWAY SOMEHOW WELL HERES OUR CHANCE TO GIVE THEM WHAT THEY DESERVE... TO ME THEY DESEVRE MORE THEY RISKED THEY'RE LIVE FOR OUR COUNTRY HOW CAN WE ACTUALLY PAY THEM BACK FOR THAT? I THINK THAT STOUALND HIGH SCHOOL HAS A WONDERFUL IDEA AND A BIG HEART!!!...

I belive that its a good idea to give to the veterans because they risk our lives for us we can at least pay them back a little for ALL they have done for us! GO STOUTLAND TIGERS!!!

I feel like giving back to WWII veterans who have given so much is just a small way to repay them for their sacrifice. In a world that sometimes tends to be more selfish and concerned with themselves, is there a bigger lesson we can teach our children?? I think all the schools have novel reasons for wanting to raise funds and Stoutland R-2 Schools certainly could use more supplies, technology, scholarships, instructional programs, etc., but what a great idea to think beyond themselves.

Personally fundraising for the veterans is a good idea for a school because it is teaching kids that it is important to give to someone BESIDES themselves and that they should be thankful for what the veterans have done for YOU!!! GO STOUTLAND TIGERS!!!!!!

I BELIEVE THAT WILLARD HAS THE BEST IDEA BECAUSE THEY ARE HELPING STUDENTS IN THIER SCHOOL WITHOUT WANTING MORE TECHNOLOGY AND ARE NOT JUST THINKING OF THEMSELVES, THEY ARE THINKING OF THE ONES IN NEED.

I THOUGHT THE FUNDRAISING HAD TO BE FOR THE SCHOOL AND ITS NEEDS, WHAT DOES SENDING VETERANS TO DC HAVE TO DO WITH THE SCHOOL? I DONT THINK IT IS A GOOD FUNDRAISING TOPIC.

Dear KSPR, On the Finley River School... The fund raising is not just for another scholarship but for a scholarship for children on the Autism spectrum and their siblings. Could you please add "Fundraising to benefit a Scholarship fund for children with AUTISM.... Thank you. Linda Barger 838-8412
