Dental Students Help Rural Kids Get Care

By Kyle Bosch

Many rural areas across the state are seeing a shortage in dentists.

And as a result some people are not able to get the dental care they need.

But in Theodosia kids can get free dental help right at their school.

Two weeks a year, for the past 11 years, Lutie students get free dental work at school.

School nurse Kristi Williams brought in UMKC School of Dentistry students to "fix" the growing tooth problem.

And while some kids have trouble "opening up," UMKC dentists say it's rewarding.

The dental work is free for Lutie students, but since UMKC has to bring down all the portable equipment, the cost ends up being 7 to 8 thousand dollars.

School nurse Kristi Williams raises money for the program through fundraisers, donations, and small grants.

Lutie is the only school district in the state that has the UMKC dentist team visit.
