4-H Club Holding Benefit Garage Sale

By Natalie Swallow

Almost three weeks after tornadoes swept through Newton County killing more than a dozen people and destroying homes, many of our thoughts have moved on past this tragedy.

The Wire Road Wranglers 4-H Club from Crane decided they wanted to help though after they found out one of their 4-H friends had lost her home.

The group will help 15 families from Newton County who lost everything.

"They're practically family to us because they are in 4-H, and we know one of the girls from horse bowl," Jessica Lane said.

The sights of destroyed homes and lives motivated the 4-H club to do a benefit garage sale.

"We'll be doing pony rides and petting zoos. We're going to be selling furniture, toys," Will King said.

Because most of the families they want to help have nowhere to put donated items, the group is raising money.

"They lost everything. They lost their house, the barn, all livestock, really only thing they have left is their family," Lesa King said.

Their 4-H family hopes others will share their compassion and help Newton County tornado victims.

"I think a lot of people should try to help all these families that got hit by tornado because what if that family was you," Will King said.

"It will help them rebuild their homes and get supplies like food and water and stuff and new clothes," Lane said.

The benefit garage sale starts at 8 a.m. Friday, May 30 and Saturday, May 31 at Town and Country R.V. at 3250 West Sunshine in Springfield.

Town and Country R.V. will donate 10% of the stores sales Friday and Saturday to the tornado families also.

Thank you ever so much for helping us promote our benefit. We raised almost $800 for the Newton County 4-H Disaster Fund, and we had to stop at noon on Saturday, because of the rain. We had lots of people stopping to shop and let their kids pet the animals and ride ponies. We couldn't have done this well without help from your station. The opportunity to help others and to have to do interviews with reporters were both great learning experiences for the kids in 4-H that were helping.
