Man Kills Self During Traffic Stop

By Brad Belote

The Aurora Police department says a man killed himself during a traffic stop Friday.

Police say Steven D. Guthrie, 40, was pulled over as part of the investigation into a hit-and-run accident in Mount Vernon earlier in the day. While the officer was talking to Guthrie, Guthrie shot himself in the head. He later died at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

Steven was my brother-in-law. On behalf of the family, we are outraged that the newspaper would so carelessly print a story of this nature. They did not have the facts behind the story, nor did they need it for their headline. When something of such tragic nature occurs, it is all we could hope from fellow human beings for a little sensitivity in a time of despair. Steve leaves behind three children and many, many friends and family. We will miss you Steve. Thanks for always keeping us laughing.

This is so sad. A permanent resolution to a temporary problem.
