The water moved so fast that in less than an hour, the downtown disappeared, and some people barely had time to react.
"It's crazy,” said Bruce Rinehart, who had to be evacuated Thursday. “That's about the only thing you can say about it."
It is pretty crazy, but there's plenty more to say.
"It's sad that we couldn't do something to stop the water," said Kayren Bremer. Her business is located in downtown.
The water did stop—at Seventh and Broadway. Then it rose.
“Probably four feet,” said Bremer. “There is no street right now.”
The water stopped in front of Bremer's storefront. "My first thought was I better get the doors sandbagged and get ready for what will come in," she said. She's lucky, in a way. Those who weren't were the people who left their cars downtown. And even her neighbor, who refused to evacuate.
"They warned him, but he is new and he hasn't seen this kind of water,” said Bremer.
"The guy told us to go evacuate, and it wasn't like this,” said Rinehart, who pointed to the height of the water.
The water flooded the downtown in less than an hour, taking along with it anything in its path. And even making water snakes look for dry land.
“We didn't know what to think,” said Rinehart.
Everyone had to be evacuated. Businesses, homes, and a mobile home park were all flooded out, leaving some of the people, burned out. "There's nothing anything you can do about it, it's a devastating feeling," she said.
