On June 10th, 2007, Zach Jones was beaten to death after his friends accidentally sent a text message to someone they didn't know, simply asking what they were doing over the weekend. That innocent mistake led to a cell phone battle with a jealous boyfriend on the other end of line and a beating that left so many people wondering why.
Tina Jones says her son Zach was about as loyal as they come. "Once he was your friend, he always had your back,” she says. “He truly had your back."
Watching out for a friend is partly what cost Zach his life.
One year ago, Tina says her son died from a beating at Atchley Park, in an epic fight over something trivial that Zach didn't do.
"They were trying to text a girl, and they texted it to a wrong number, which was the girlfriend of one of the guys that was involved in this,” says Tina. “Then she called the boyfriend to try to make him jealous."
Zach was with his friends Steven and Matt. Steven ran to get help, but Matt couldn't run anywhere.
"It was a pretty quick ordeal,” recalls Matt Bankston. Matt couldn't move because he was beaten with baseball bats and tire tools that left him with several skull fractures, partial paralyzation and speech challenges.
"I would trade places with Zach,” says the now-18-year-old Matt. “I started it. I sent the text message and talked smack.”
In this last year, Matt has blamed himself for Zach's death because Zach was a friend who had his back until Zach couldn’t.
“I kind of thought I was bulletproof. Every 17 year old boy has it in their minds,” says Matt. "I'm not as angry anymore."
"Nine people were down at that park,” says Tina. “Nine people came to meet 17-year-old boys."
Tina has spent the last year finding courage to share her story. Though she's happy to see a memorial at Atchley Park being built in Zach's honor, she mostly wants justice for all the people supposedly involved. "There should've been more charges,” says Tina. "I never thought he was going to die.”
Four people faced charges for that fatal beating, but one person hanged himself in jail. However, Tina Jones says it’s no secret that at least nine people were there watching, including a 51-year-old grandmother and even a 12-year-old kid. The trial is set for late this year.

i did not know zach but i did know matt. i hadn't talked to him in over a year and i decided to call him a couple of days ago. i can not believe all this has happened in a year. i can not believe a teenage boy would die and another would be paralyzed because of an older mans jealousy. and the people that just stood and watched should feel guilty, if not even more guilty just because they let it happen. this is incredible and unbelievable

In the town I live in I promise this would be big news and something would be done. We have a very thorough Prosecuting Attorney. What is Lebanon's Prosecuting Attorney doing about this? Has she over seen this? Has Lebanon Police done the best job they could do in this investigation? Has anyone made sure all their t's are crossed and i's are dotted? I have been following this story and it seems like a big joke as far as how it has been not handled. I just don't understand.

How can the community let this go by.The mother of the attacker, What's up with that? Was she working when this happened? I this so! Did she leave her job to go help kill Zach? I think so.Then returned to work afterwards! How can Lebanon Police show their faces. It was MURDER for God Sake! All that was there should be sentence. They stood there and watch it happen. They all knew they were not having a family reunion at the Park.Actions should be taken!

I am not sure how the Lebanon Police can live with their selves when they think about what a shotty job they did in this case. This is a disgrace. Everyone who was there should have some kind of punishment, even if it was just community service. Anyone who read the reports would agree. It wasn't like these people just showed up at the park for a fight they meant to do damage they left those 2 boys for dead. And all 9 people stood and watched-Why didn't someone stop them or go for help?

i agree, everyone that was there, should of been sentenced, not just the ones that did the beating. in my opinion, everyone that was there participated in his death, because anyone of them could of stopped it but chose to just stand there and watch. they are all involved. if they seen it happening, the police should of been called right away, maybe zach would still be alive today if they would of. that's the shameful part of it.

If the mother of the attacker was an accomplice or complicit in this horrific act in any way...she should also be punished accordingly. The Dardenne Prairie Internet "hanging" incident from last year, while different in scope and nature, is a case in point of how parents are held liable for such actions.

Justice was clearly not served! Her son was BEATEN TO DEATH! This means he wasn't just hit once or twice. It is just sick to think how people just watched him die! EACH PERSON IS GUILTY, and in the wrong for being there to support the people that KILLED her son! I hope she gets justice because those people don't belong in regular society with the metalities they showed. An eye for an eye... He died, and they should rot in jail.
