Nemenhah Band Discusses Alternative Treatments

By Christine Daues

A Minnesota boy suffering from cancer is making national headlines because he and his parents are refusing chemotherapy.

The boy's parents say they are following the teachings of the Nemenhah Band, based in Weaubleau, Mo.

"The basic premise we adhere to is do no harm," said Phillip "Cloudpiler" Landis. He is the elected principal medicine chief of the group.

Landis was renting a home in Weaubleau, Mo. He said is consulting with Daniel Hauser, the 13-year-old boy battling Hodgkins Lymphoma. A Minnesota court ruled last week Daniel has been medically neglected because they stopped chemotherapy.

"We respect their wishes when it comes to personal decisions," Landis said.

But Landis said they use modern medicine when necessary.

"Say your child falls out of a tree and his brain is hanging out. We're not going to put plaster on there, go to the hospital and have the surgeon put your brain back in," Landis said.

The Hausers are treating Daniel with herbal supplements, vitamins and natural alternatives.

Eight years ago, Landis had cancer and used the chaga mushroom to treat it succesfully. He said his group is recognized by the federal government as a traditional organization of Native Americans and they believe in acting the way the spirit guides them. Landis says that is what Daniel Hauser is doing.

"They have a substance they want to pump into his body that they believe will kill him," Landis said.
