The sixth edition of KSPR and Oprah's Big Give: Change Your School Challenge hits close to home.
KSPR’s Natalie Nunn tells us why the five Springfield public high schools are raising money.
Five schools, one district, and a history making challenge.
“As far as we know it’s the first time in Springfield public schools history that's happened.”
Last week Springfield schools collaborated on a week long fundraiser. They scheduled three big events: Dine Out Springfield, the Big Dance, and SPS at its Best.
“Friday night we had something called the Big Dance here at Parkview. We had around 1,100 students come. It was very successful,” Parkview teacher, Becca Dennis said.
The Big Dance was a first for the school district.
It raised $6,000.
“Dr. Ridder was talking to us at a meeting and is already planning for the big dance next year.”
All the money goes to a freshman mentoring program.
“If you can catch them and build relationships that first year, you can really be successful throughout high school,” Parkview student, Kaitlin Oxenreider said.
The funding for the program in place has been reduced. Teachers and students hope to keep the program rolling.
“I think it's very important you come into high school and have no idea what to expect,” Central student, Amy Wei said.
“When I went to Central as a middler it was very much a shock and change.”
Whirlwind fundraising was a push for student leaders.
“I'm glad it’s coming to an end but at the same time I'm glad I dedicated my time.”
Time they hope will bring change to the future of the schools.
“It's kind of exciting for the district to collaborate five high schools instead of competing.”
