Springfield Skatepark Future Control Questioned

By Natalie Swallow

Two rounds of mediation and no agreement over management of the Springfield Skatepark. Now, the Springfield-Greene County Park Board says it's taking over for the Skatepark Association.

But, the Skatepark Association and the city are not seeing eye to eye on the future of the skatepark.

"This is my home, I'm here more than I'm at my real house, I don't want it changed," skateboarder Donovan Rhoades said.

Rhoades has skated at the skatepark for the last three years, and he fears a change in management would change what the park is all about.

"It's all friends here, you don't have to worry about fitting in," Rhoades said.

But, disagreements between Parks and the Skatepark Association have left the skatepark’s future headed toward Parks control.

"Parks had strong desire to have more oversight because we own the land, and we feel we have potential to be liable," city spokesperson Louise Whall said.

"Why is it any different now than it ever was, we have same insurance in place, if they wanted us to increase it we would," Springfield Skatepark Association president Annette Weatherman said. "The liability issue we feel is a smokescreen for them simply wanting to take the park."

"The idea that this is a grab to have a feather in the cap or crown jewel, the park system has a lot of crown jewels and gems. It has a lot of outdoor facilities that make it a gold medal system. They don't need another for that purpose," Whall said.

The city says it plans to file an order for the Skatepark Association to vacate the skatepark, but the Skatepark Association hasn't ruled out drastic measures in making a stand for what it feel is “its” skatepark, including standing arm and arm and refusing to leave.

"We're doing it for the kids. The kids want it the way it is," Weatherman said.

The Parks Department refused to speak with us on camera about the controversy.

At 7:30 Wednesday night, the Skatepark Association is holding a public meeting to talk about what to do now. Anyone is invited to attend.
