Couple to face trial for selling baby
WEST BEND, Wis. (AP) - A southeast Wisconsin couple will face trial on charges of selling their newborn girl to a Missouri woman for $6,000.
A Washington County judge said Thursday there was enough evidence to warrant a trial for 38-year-old David Schmidt and 33-year-old Angela Schmidt of Kewaskum.
Each is charged with being party to unauthorized adoption placement. The charge carries a maximum penalty of six years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
Their lawyer didn't immediately return a message seeking comment. He has said previously the Clinton, Mo. woman misled his clients into believing the 2004 transaction was conducted legally.
Prosecutors say Angela Schmidt claimed to be a surrogate mother but was impregnated by her own husband, not the donor's sperm.
