SPRINGFIELD - We've done speed zones mid-morning and during afternoon rush hour, but what about on the early morning commute?
We went to a neighborhood where viewers tell us speeding is a constant problem in the early morning, and Holland School is just down the block.
At Holland and Seminole, kids have to cross the street everyday to get down to school, but with folks speeding by, parents are concerned for their kids’ safety.
With a speed limit of 30 miles per hour, the stretch of Seminole between National and Kimbrough rarely sees cars actually going that speed.
Jenni Mettemeyer has had enough.
"It doesn't stop. It's usually worse in the morning when kids are going to school and about 3:00 when people are hurrying to pick kids up or get home from work," Mettemeyer said.
We caught most cars going at least five over the speed limit, but we clocked one car at 49 miles per hour, which is 19 over the speed limit.
When asked why she was going this fast, the driver said, “I'm picking up my friend for school."
"You see kids riding bikes across really quick and then a car zooming by- just blowing 4-way stop signs," Mettemeyer said.
We saw two cars blow right past a stop sign.
Even the crossing guard told us he sometimes has trouble stopping cars.
"When I stop in the middle sometimes with my sign- like this- they don't care."
Viewers’ biggest concern about speeding on this street is that Holland school is just two blocks away and kids are walking down that busy street.
"We just ask you to slow down- be careful- is it really worth the risk- is where you're going really that important that you are willing to hurt a child,” Mettemeyer said.
