Speed Zone Heads to Republic

By Emily Rittman

KSPR's Speed Zone is back by popular demand. We leave Springfield’s busy streets for a more rural Republic road. KSPR’s Emily Rittman found out that the problem is the same.

Once again, we quit keeping count of anyone who was driving just five miles over the speed limit. We still caught about 20 drivers in an hour going about seven to ten miles too fast.

It seems no matter where you live...no one wants to follow the speed limit. The frustrations are also the same for parents. A concerned parent and Republic driver said, "You can turn your back for two seconds and your kid gets hit. Drivers need to be responsible too.” The driver stopped by to tell us she was happy KSPR’s Speed Zone came to her home in Republic because of her son. Her 16-year-old son Lewis Gerbigbarto said, "I don't feel safe with them speeding."

Republic Police Chief Mark Lowe says three police officers cover the growing town's many miles. Chief Lowe said, "If you could find the solution you'll win a noble peace prize because you could save more lives than most vaccines." He says it’s an uphill battle. His officers are taking a proactive approach by asking people in Republic to click to voice their concerns. They want you to say where and when people are whipping through Republic neighborhoods. Lowe said, “They know what's going on we just get a snapshot."

Republic police say they will investigate speeding complaints. If they find a problem they will patrol the area and issue tickets. If you live in republic and lead foots are putting the petal to the metal. You can let police know by going to www.republicmo.com and click on traffic requests.

KSPR’s Speed Zone will start airing on Monday's but this week we're doing a little extra to get the word on the streets.
