Speed Zone: Clocking One of Springfield's Busiest Streets

By Emily Rittman

KSPR's Speed Zone is back, clocking speeders on one of Springfield's busiest streets. National is known as a major through street that drivers use to get from one side of town to the other. The homeowners who live there who say speeders are driving so fast they're smashing into houses. No matter which way drivers are going on South National. Speeders going north and south kept our radar gun clicking. It seems no one wants to go 35 miles an hour. We caught one driver going 45 miles per hour she says she wasn't feeling well. Another driver says, “I know it’s not safe” before speeding off.

The six homeowners on this block are sick of speeders. Homeowner Carole Petty says, "Of the six houses three for certain and possibly four have been hit by vehicles." One driver took out a light pole then smashed into Petty’s next door neighbor’s house. "It just bashed in the whole front and continued on into our house." Carole hopes drivers will realize South National isn't a race way, it’s a place six families call home.

Many of the homeowners on South National turn around in their front yards in order to pull out nose first. They say speeders make it too dangerous to back out of their driveways.

KSPR’Speed Zone passes on the biggest violator streets to the Springfield police traffic department. If you have a problem on your street we'd love to hear from you. You have to let us know where and importantly what time of the day speeders are a problem.
