Speed Zone: Accident Changed Driver's Habit

By Brad Belote

KSPR's Speed Zone introduced you to a family whose son is comatose after a horrible accident involving an inattentive driver. Now months after the accident speeders and careless driving are back up in the area. KSPR's Emily Rittman went back to the neighborhood near Golden and Scenic and talks to parents who are frustrated that one family's tragedy can't stop speeders. We talked to several parents who say they'll never forget the accident that put Hayden Stanley in a coma and broke another teen’s leg just seven months ago. Unfortunately they say speeders already have.

Danny Venable is fed up with speeders. With KSPR’s radar gun in hand, he watches a driver fly by 15 miles per hour over the posted limit. The father of three is a Speed Zone fan for a reason. Venable watched his neighbors, the Stanleys, suffer when their son Hayden was hit by a driver who was driving too fast for conditions. Hayden is still in a coma and drivers are still speeding. Venable says, "I won't even go 20 miles per hour down this road anymore because I can't imagine hitting a kid because I have three of my own.”

Lots of parents in this neighborhood fear what happened a few blocks away could happen to their kids. One of those parents, Dawn Rethman had a close call. She says, “We were walking in this neighborhood and he walked right out in front of a car." Rethman's son Joey has autism. She practices safety with him but still worries about him wandering.
Rethman says, “I’d say okay Joe look left, look right cross the road."

Three autistic children live within a few blocks of Doris and Roxbury. Even though they're under watchful eyes, their parents want drivers to know not every child understands the dangers of crossing the street. Rethman says, "He needs a little grace and mercy, people going the extra mile for him." The extra mile without the extra RPM’s.

Venable says, "Someone can end up 6 feet under or someone could go to jail. Is it worth it for that extra minute?
